opponents wrong. thanks to daniel inouye, hawaii has become a modern, prosperous state. many alaskans have a special fond unless for the 50th state, especially i have to say at this time of the year when it's 40 below in fairbanks. daniel inouye began his public career and service at the age of 17 when he entered the army after the attack on pearl harbor. he served with incredible distinction, earning the nation's highest military medal for action in italy. as a member of the senate, senator inouye continued his fierce defense of his state in his partnership with alaska. my preye predecessor, ted steve, knew senator inouye as his brother. they worked together and produced much good for both our states. that will last for generations. when i was elected to this office, senator inouye was one of the first members to reach out to me to ask how he could help. the unique thing about senator inouye was always his quiet approach to all the issues. he provided me quiet advice and helped me learn how this place works. many times i'd be down here at the podium and in the well here waiting for the vo

two weeks until the new year and the president is about to leave for hawaii, and congress is going to be gone for christmas, too, and you know there is no more effective motivator for capitol hill than pressure, and they have it right now. what the president has done today is he has laid out a scaled down version of a fiscal cliff deal, you know, keeping tax cuts in place for 98% of americans, extending unemployment insurance, and laying out a plan, a down payment on a promise to do entitlement reform and also made a pitch to the american people to only blame republicans if there is no deal. so it is a two-pronged attack that he makes right before taking off on vacation. so right now, you know, the plan is basically to keep the pressure on, and we know both sides are planning to come back at some point after christmas and try to get something worked out, but no overt optimism coming really from the aides on either side right now. we'll see, soledad. i will tell you folks right now are planning to make new year's eve plans here in washington, d.c. we're not so sure we're getting out

will plunge the economy back into recession. president obama flies back from hawaii tonight to be ready if the senate comes back with a plan when it returns to work tomorrow. and house leaders are huddling with members on stand-by to return. senior congressional correspondent dana bash is following all of it for us. what are you hearing? >> there was a conference call of course members of the house leadership even, they're back in their districts, but there was a conference call today among those house republican leaders trying to figure out if and when the house should come back into session. two republican sources tell me they did not make a decision on this call. it's still up in the air. and a big reason for that is if anything can get done in the next six days, the ball is in the senate's court. the capitol is a ghost town. neither chamber in session. an eerie calm since the fiscal cliff only congress has the power to avert is less than one week away. from their home, senate democratic leaders is trying to figure out if the president's scaled back bill can pass congress at the 11th

-bye to hawaii senator daniel inouye. there's a special memorial service. the senate chaplain will deliver a sermon and you see president obama wiping tears from his eyes. he was the second longest serving senator in history. he served hawaii since 1959. that's where president obama grew up so he's well familiar with daniel inouye. he was awarded medal of honor after losing an arm in world war ii. it was at a hospital in recovery that he met bob dole. senator inouye was 88 years old. be interested to see. he was the pros -- supposed to leave for hawaii for his christmas vacation today. i do not think it would happen. this morning around 10:30 a.m. for the national -- at the national cathedral for the funeral. i did not know what he does next. democrats have been saying all along they were prepared to go over the cliff if they were not presented with a deal they thought was acceptable. i think it is possibly even at this point looks likely to happen. and then they would have to move on what is next. they always believed from a strategic perspective that if they went over the cliff, all of the taxes would expire and any thing the house republicans would pass from then on out would be a tax cut as opposed to a tax increase. this has been a rhetorical proposition that was put out by even senator patty murray as early as last july. the funny thing what is when you heard top republican talkers and leadership discussing the vote that was supposed to be happening last night that is how they phrased it. not a tax hike but letting rates rise on an income where it was already set t
